One fall evening, my father and I went to eat a local Vietnamese restaurant. During dinner, I decided to interview him about his experience in the Vietnamese l culture. I interviewed him because he could offer a unique perspective. You see, my father left Vietnam in 1979 at the age of 19 to escape fighting for the Communist party. As such, his life experience includes a multitude of cultures; French-Vietnamese, Communist, and American. As our conversation evolved, we spoke of pre and post-communism; compared to Western culture. Some of the things he noted were the culture shock of trying to assimilate to the American language, its idioms, and regional differences. He also struggled to understand the religious customs, the music, the clothes, and more importantly the food.…

When we think of childhood, some people reflect on the joys and happiness it brings to the family structure. My childhood was the opposite of being joyous. I experienced very traumatic episodes of physical abuse, psychological abuse, and homophobia from my father. The most critical aspect of my childhood development was when I decided to “come out” to my family. However, I did not tell them altogether, rather I told them separately when the time felt appropriate. I first expressed my identity to…

Reflective Practice in Professional Development of Early Childhood Educators Based on my personal own observations, Early Childhood Education (ECE) teachers usually go through many professional developmental stages. Accordingly, the level of ECE competency for each of these professional developmental stages depends on mastery of teaching techniques, choice of appropriate learning tools, and implementation of effective educational methods or frameworks. Therefore, ECE teachers can progressively…

teachers are not aware of their values and beliefs and their impact on teacher’s practice. On reflection, I realized that I myself have evolved within the last one year and my belief about teaching children has changed to working with children. I have discarded my naïve beliefs (Brownlee, et al., 2000), and have developed my early childhood education philosophy on the theories and philosophies I have studied so far. I shall critically examine three aspects of my early childhood philosophy in…

Within “Frost at Midnight,” Samuel Coleridge validates the importance of self-reflection through solitude. Coleridge creates a scenic image of the world around the speaker during the time of his solitude. During his time alone, the speaker reflects about his childhood and the aspiration he has for the infant child sleeping in the cottage. The importance of solitude demonstrated in “Frost at Midnight” by the feelings the speaker has, the time intervals from present to past, and the speaker’s…

“Exploring my Image of the Child” As Dahlberg (1999) explains, understanding and defining the ideal child is a difficult task. In fact, each person has their own definition of the child based on their own worldviews, thus, perhaps making ‘the’ child an abstract concept. This paper is a personal reflection of my worldview, personal experiences, and understanding of a child. I also explore how my new perspective of early childhood education has added to my roles as a Child and Youth Care…

Today, aged 52, and with two children of her own, Julie re-reads her letters for the first time in years, and offers several reflections. “I feel the sadness of the little girl that was me. This week I focused my reflection of the NAACP on an article that depicts the Health advocacy programs implemented by the NAACP. The article outlines the main principals of health focused on by the NAACP, which include - childhood obesity, HIV/AIDS, healthcare system reform, and health disparities. Each branch of the health advocacy program is intended to improve the well being of African American families. The article proposed the idea of just how much of a lack of knowledge the black community…

The word ‘Reflection’ can mean many things, among these are sending back i.e. the return of light, heat, sound or energy from a surface; a sign or result of something; and serious or careful thought. I have explored many of these different meanings in my visual diary. The Greek philosopher Plato saw all of life as a reflection - we are all in a cave with our back to the fire and the life we live is actually just a shadow of reality dancing on the walls.…
