The purpose of this written assignment is to allow me to demonstrate my understandings of the crucial characteristics and elements that contribute to become an effective early childhood edu-cator. It gives me the opportunity to observe educators within the industry and reflect and ana-lyse on the educator’s teaching qualities, the students learning and just what effective teaching methods are used. Each reflection focusses on a range of topics and areas that relate to become an effective early childhood educator while linking to what I have seen, identifying a range of research and learning theories and how I can use my observations and interpretations to im-prove my teaching practice.

Hannah Vickers is a student on a learning experience at a local kindergarten in NZ. Throughout the day, Hannah used effective communication with the children while engaging in their learning through their play. This was shown when the children were playing outside in their imaginary “chocolate factory”, Hannah engaged in one-to-one interactions with the small group of children while getting down on their level for face-to-face communication which promoted a secure positive relationship. Hannah acknowledged the children for their accomplishments and efforts when the children resolved and completed the activity. “Communication is crucial to belonging, being and becoming” (EYLF, 2009, p38). According to the (“National Quality Standard, Professional Learning Program, 2012)”, its cru-cial to develop strong relationships with children to help the children feel secure which frees them to explore and learn to their fullest capabilities. Positive communication is a key element of an authoritative approach and using effective interactions with the children will allow them to develop a strong self-identity, self -esteem and appropriate social skills (EYLF, 2009). Educator’s must be active listeners and use a pleasant, calm tone of voice along with simple language by warmly greeting the children at the beginning of every school day; this will establish a secure strong relationship between the educator and the child. “The use of effective communication will support the children’s social and emotional wellbeing and development”. (Kids Matter, n.d.). Using the effective communication Hannah used will help build relationships between families, children and other education staff, this will allow families and educators to share important information about each individual child’s; interests, family background values and daily life experiences to help develop a key understanding about that
