Why does one choose nursing? A question that can only be answered, through one’s true passion and resilience regarding the profession. Nursing in the past, has often been associated as vocationally calling to perform a virtuous role (price, 2011). A profession that has historically been “untaught”, and merely performed out of compassion and the wish to help others (?cite book). It has been attributed to individuals with an innate calling to care for the needy based on their experience and observation. According to Florence Nightingale, they played a role in which they put the patient in the best position for nature to act upon. As well, a desire within me to advocate for the needs of patients simply due to the perceived importance I have grasped for patient centered care from my previous degree. It taught me that a nurse plays an effective role in providing patient centered care. Lastly, I believe that having an empathetic personality influenced my decision, as working in an environment that provides holistic and comprehensive care is an ideal professional environment. Furthermore, the nursing profession is currently a holistic and compassionate career that will only increase its scope in the future. Nursing will become a profession, in which individuals are working in collaborative teams to educate patients and help them play a role in managing their health. Nurses will be given greater leadership roles to help designate models that provide the required care and support needed in the community (RNAO). As a future nurse and a current nurse, I will ensure that I continue to provide compassionate care. As well, incent a collaborative team effort towards health reforms that focus on preventative health rather than
