Growing up I always dreamed about what it would be like to become a nurse. After gaining employment at the University of Florida Health as an electrocardiogram tech and being able to work closely with nurses, I learned that being a nurse can be even more demanding than I imagined. It can entail long work hours, no breaks, and a heap of overtime. In addition, the work of nurses puts them in close contact with patients who have infectious diseases. Even though being a nurse can be somewhat difficult; it also, comes with spectacular benefits. The rewards that come with the demanding career are what influenced me to begin working on my Associate of Science in Nursing. Not only is the job outlook abundant, but the areas of specialties to work in are limitless. The job outlook for the United States in 2012 was 2,711,500, and is said to increase approximately 526,800 from 2012-2022. That is a 19.4 percent increase in a span of 10 years. To name a few; geriatric nurse, neuroscience nurse, or even a urology nurse. A nursing degree can also be used in any state, all that is required is to apply for a nursing license in the state I would like to work in. Which would be very beneficial if I were to be a traveling nurse. If I were to continue my education, and obtain a bachelor of science in nursing; or even, a master of science in nursing, I would be able to advance in this career. Depending on where I find employment, I would also be able to obtain a benefit package. Nurses typically earn between $45,000 and $95,000 a year, with a median annual salary of approximately $65,000. Some employers also give bonuses and pay for continuing education. People in this profession are often represented by nurses’ unions. This means that their salary rates and benefits are negotiated on their behalf by union representatives. All of these things would allow me to live a life of comfort, to where I could even set up a college savings account for my children. In conclusion, the above reasons are what makes becoming a registered nurse a spectacular career to me. Despite the occupational hazards that may come with the job title and the time spent away from my family. Having the chance to change the lives of others, explore opportunities in a career where I can advance, and being rewarded with a decent compensation are perks I wish others could say they look forward to after
