My ultimate ambition of becoming a registered nurse goes beyond just helping those in need; I want to make a difference in people’s lives and in how they view health. I want to provide patient and family centered care with a holistic approach while applying both the art and science fields involved in nursing. Although, I’ve only experienced one semester as a nursing student I have shared memories of laughter, sadness, and tears with both patients, staff members, and fellow colleagues. From doing something as simple as taking a vital sign or administering medication to actually taking the time to sit with a patient and play cards while conversing with them to listen to their needs is what matters most to patients. Anyone can be a nurse, but not everyone can make a difference. My satisfaction comes in helping others, but most importantly making an impact in their lives. I know this career won’t be easy and as of now I don’t have much experience, but as a young lady I know I have the compassion, dedication, willingness to be a life-long learner, patience, leadership skills and a sense of advocacy to have what it takes to be a successful

From a young age, I witnessed how nurses cared for people, how they showed compassion, and how they provide reassurance during moments of chaos and fear. When my uncle was diagnosed with cancer, it was the nurse that comforted my family during moments of despair, it was the nurse who educated us and answered our numerous questions, and it was the nurse who was the first to respond and care for my uncle till his last few moments. Throughout nursing school my philosophy became to be like the nurses who cared for my uncle, to create a long-lasting impact on my patient’s life and to make a difference for my patients. I quickly realized that to make a difference, to provide adequate care for my patients, and to be the best nurse possible, not only must I provide physical care for the patient, but I also have to address all dimensions of wellness for my patient’s, their family, and myself. As I seek a position as a pediatric staff nurse, I understand the importance of caring for the patient, the patient’s family, and myself.…

Nursing goes beyond caring for a patient during their illness and managing their disease process. Nursing includes adapting to a patient’s and their family’s physical, social, spiritual, environmental and psychological needs. I believe in treating the whole patient and being supportive of the family’s needs as well. Shelly & Miller (2006) asserts “while critical thinking, decision making, and leadership skills are extremely important, the characteristics nurses need most are compassion, competence, faith, integrity and responsibility” (p. 291).…
