You are surrounded by a horde of pixelated demons ready to destroy you and make you lose all your hard earned gold, when suddenly your friend from the warrior’s guild comes into the screen plunging a sword into the abdomens of those demons. Many of you know this doesn’t happen in reality, but some of you may not know that scenes like this are being played out this very instant, between millions of kids and adults worldwide. In a world where technology is making ungodly leaps and bounds beyond what our ancestors believed possible, a new technology was introduced that some say may be the cause for a change in our behavior. This new technology is video games, more precisely Massive Multiplayer Role Playing Games or MMORPGs. There has been some …show more content…
The belief behind this theory is that people want to leave there troubles behind and enter a world of fiction where they feel that they have more control over the events that take place. My dear friend whom I mentioned earlier when asked why he plays gave me the following answer “I play because it gives me the feeling that I am stronger and cooler then I am in real life”, with that being said I agree with Hagström and Kaldo on their belief of escapism being a main reason to play, but I also have to throw another reasoning behind my friend’s hours of gameplay, and it’s simply that he finds it fun and …show more content…
The two researchers set out to find why players found the game to be so interesting and why they would spend as reported earlier 29.11 hours a week on the game (Peters and Malesky 481). Their research was done by having players answer a questionnaire, they then interpreted the answers into results, and again the results found were in contradiction to their hypothesis that the players played for the feeling of accomplishment. There was almost a level playing field as to why players spent so much time on the game, but there was a spike in the results showing that extraversion people has a higher percentage of playing for leadership motivations. This is not very commonly thought however by most, instead there is a social stigma that people seen as MMORPGs gamers are considered introverts that don’t tend to socialize very
