The complex world of gaming often tends to be perplexing to outsiders who do not understand the purpose of spending hours in front of a flickering computer screen. Gamers are frequently misunderstood because people who do not play video games seldom recognize the innumerable benefits of gaming. The reality is that there are countless positive effects of gaming on those who participate, including the ability of gamers to seamlessly interact with other gamers, the notion that games allow people to be themselves, the fact that games have the potential to help gamers accomplish things that they would be unable to accomplish in real life, the belief that video games offer opportunities for acceptance, and the fact that many games promote a positive message.

A positive effect of video games is that they give gamers the opportunity to interact with each other. In the fascinating article, “Profiles from Alter Ego: Avatars and Their Creators,” author Robbie Cooper and co-author Tracy Spaight explore the profile of a man named James Rowe, who plays video games for over eighty hours per week. Rowe is physically disabled, and only has partial use of his hands. Rowe explains that he plays “online video games because I get to interact with people. The computer screen is my window to the world” (Cooper and Spaight 370). In the real world, people are often extremely uncomfortable around Rowe, as some may find his appearance disturbing, however, in the virtual world, he is just like everyone else.
