A positive effect of video games is that they give gamers the opportunity to interact with each other. In the fascinating article, “Profiles from Alter Ego: Avatars and Their Creators,” author Robbie Cooper and co-author Tracy Spaight explore the profile of a man named James Rowe, who plays video games for over eighty hours per week. Rowe is physically disabled, and only has partial use of his hands. Rowe explains that he plays “online video games because I get to interact with people. The computer screen is my window to the world” (Cooper and Spaight 370). In the real world, people are often extremely uncomfortable around Rowe, as some may find his appearance disturbing, however, in the virtual world, he is just like everyone else.
