Valeriano Weyler Leadership Qualities

Valeriano Weyler was a thriving Spanish general who served many prestigious posts throughout his military career. He became known through the Spanish- American War for his failed "Reconcentration Plan." He was born in Palma de Mallorca, Spain in 1838. At a young age he pursued in his father's footsteps to build a career in the army. He established his career at the age of twenty and quickly gained rank of lieutenant. This influenced other quick advancements that he made further into his career, which was gaining respect and trust as a strong leader. On February 10, 1896, he became governor of Cuba, replacing Martinez de Campos.
