On the night of Jan 31, 2000, Ray was involved in a scuffle outside of a nightclub as the Super Bowl ended in Atlanta.
Two men were stabbed to death, and Ray Lewis was seen as the murderer. Lewis, along with two other friends, were charged with murder and aggravated assault (Rhoden). Not only was his reputation hurt, but even his own sense of pride. After pleading guilty to misdemeanor charges, the murder charges attached to him were dropped and he was given a year of probation.
After all of Lewis’ legal problems were set to rest, he made it one of his goals to use his experience to inspire others. He tells young men, “‘Trust me, don’t ever take my path,’” and goes on to say “‘Don’t ever do it the way I did it, because everyone won’t make it’”(Rhoden).

Throughout the time that Lewis played in Baltimore, crime and unemployment were commonplace. So, He thought that it was his duty to make Baltimore a better place for everyone, especially young people looking to make a living. In an effort to create jobs, Lewis founded the Baltimore 1000 foundation, where he pledged that he would use his platform to create 1000 jobs for people of Baltimore (Warren). Lewis trying to create jobs, but he is also trying to change the lifestyle and mindsets of young people in Baltimore. While speaking about the new foundation, Lewis said that he was trying to give them physical skills that “teach them how we should live and how you should carry yourself in certain manners” (Warren). So, not only is he helping the financial status of people, but he is helping to create better people that who can be positive members of their community.
As he goes down as one of the best football players to ever play, Ray Lewis will also be known as a great man, with a great life story. He has used his past experiences to motivate himself to be a greater man, and to impact the lives of others for the better. Through God and strong will, he was able to overcome murder allegations and a rough childhood situation.
