Do you ever think how often you check your phone? Whether it’s a text, a notification, or just to open the home screen and waste time? A study by Qualtrics and Accel found that young people check their phones up to 150 times per day. Another study done by Common Sense Media reported teens spend an average of 9 hours a day using media. Many people are beginning to see the hold the digital world has on us and the mental and physical health risks that can come from it. Unplugging from technology can be just as vital as diet and exercise to live a healthy life.
There are many reasons you should consider doing a digital detox. The negative side effect of technology is an exhausting list. Studies show being digitally connected can actually make us lonelier. People who use the Internet more have a dwindling social circle and are at a greater risk for depression and loneliness.

Orianna Fielding, the author of “The Essential Digital Detox Plan”, went into some reasons why people can’t seem to unplug. She describes how the digital connection we have in our current society gives us a form of reassurance. We have the ability to take our digital life everywhere, no matter where we are.
