As a society today, people are moving in a much faster pace than ever before. Many of the advancements over the past few years can be accredited to digital media and the internet. Tenzin Gyatso, better known as the fourteenth Dalai Lama and leader of the Central Tibetan Administration, discusses the need for a moral compass in the biotechnology industry in “Ethics and the New Genetics”. However, use of the internet and social media is also in dire need of a moral compass. The internet and social media have generated many positive ramifications over the past few years. Using the internet can be extremely helpful when it comes to research, working from home, or the transfer of ideas. However, not everything about the internet is beneficial to today’s society. For example, there has been a significant increase in illegally downloaded material, identity and credit card theft, and other malicious intent. Social media, on the other hand, has also had its ups and downs. Social media makes it possible to communicate more effectively and spread information. However, there needs to be a balance. Samuel states that “the trick isn 't to unplug from our devices -- it 's to unplug from the distractions, information overload, and trash that make us unhappy”. This means that instead of giving up on technology and social media all together, find a better purpose for it. First, we need to unplug from distraction. In order to do this, Samuel suggests “committing to a single task on your computer or mobile device, the same way you might commit to an important face-to-face conversation” (Samuel). If people constantly focus on three different screens at once, they are always going to feel distracted, but by giving one item full your undivided attention you can “unplug form
