Do you think Wang Lung deserves his good fortune in The Good Earth by Pearl Buck? Wang Lung is a hard working farmer who uses his $$$ smart to create a fortune. He, however, has some flaws, which will be talked about later. Clearly Wang Lung deserves his good fortune because of his cleverness and perseverance. Wang Lung’s cleverness is constantly shown throughout the story, even the very beginning. The book states, “Instead he saved it and sold it when the snow came on the ground at the New Year when people in the towns will pay well for any price (41 Buck).” He was clever with his harvests, so he bought low and sold high, gaining more and more $$$. This helped him with his fortune. Another show of his cleverness was his buying from The Great House of Hwang. The book quotes,”Let it be bought. After all, rice land is good, and it is near the moat and we can get water every year (53 Buck).” This was a very good investment. It was a safe bet that it would produce good rice and water for their crops, and since the Great House was going bankrupt, it was at a very low price. This is what started their fortune. Even when they lost it all and went to the south, he chose to work rather than to beg. The Good Earth states,”Is there no work for a man’s hands (95 Buck)?” He refuses to beg because he wants to earn his money. It always feels more satisfying to work for something rather than having it handed to you. It also states, “Wang Lung was healed of his sickness of love by the good dark earth of his fields and he felt the moist soil on his feet and he smelled the earthy fragrance rising out of the furrows he turned for the wheat (212 Buck).” Even when he has laborers to do all the work for him he still goes out in the fields to work. That is true work ethic right there- even when he is rich he still feels the need to work for what is

The story “A Rupee Earned” written by I.F. Bulatkin established a strong connection between me and the story. An issue that was addressed in the story was fairly similar to what I had experienced in the past, where the boy in the story relied on others to achieve what he wanted at the end. This was displayed throughout the story when the father told his son that if he the son wanted to inherit his wealth he would have to earn a rupee from the labor of his own hands. While the son was very lazy and not willing to put in the effort to properly earn his father’s wealth he relied on others and tried tricking his father into thinking he earned the money.…

We can connect this novel to Chapter 21 of How to Read Literature Like a Professor, “Marked for Greatness”. In this chapter, Foster talks about how characters being different basically mark a character for “greatness”. In the book, The Good Earth, the protagonist, Wang Lung, is different from the many other people. He is referred to as a “Country Bumpkin” by many throughout the course of the novel. While others have taken a much more modern approach to life, Wang sticks to his roots and the “old way” of life.…

Pearls One symbol in the story are the pearls O-lan keeps between her breasts, portraying she and Wang Lung's relationship. When Wang Lung first discovers the jewels O-Lan had pilaged from the rich man's home, Wang Lung demands that she give them to him, but she requests to keep two small pearls, and that was when, "Wang Lung, without comprehending it, looked for an instant into the heart of this dull and faithful creature, who had labored all her life at some task at which she won no reward..." (CH 16). From this, it can be seen that Wang Lung feels empathy for his wife.
