Over the summer I started a lawn care business with the help of my friends so I could make a bit of cash. Before we knew it we had quite the big operation on our hands and people all over our town were depending on us to maintain their yards and keep them looking beautiful. All was smooth sailing until I came to the sudden realization that soon my buddies and I were going to have to be going back to school soon, and these people still needed somebody to depend on. With school, band, and other devotions soon to be taking up the majority of my time, I needed to find workers quick before the school year started. Still being a high school student, of course most of my connections were also in school with me, so I was going to have to look elsewhere for hard working individuals to help me keep the business running strong.…

My interview was with the HR generalist at my internship, a German engineering company called KEB. This division of the company is in Shakopee and employees roughly 100 people. One of the first things I noticed was the lack of diversity and females in this company. Out of the 100 there are exactly 10 women and 12 people who are minorities, some of whom are women. EEO was one of the first topics covered in HR Management and an important concept of this was that a company should reflect the demographics of the community.…

The phrases “two are better than one” or “a group can achieve more than an individual” are something I hear often. However, the diversity of opinions, cultures, and ideas among the members in a group can cause unconformity and conflicts. Working in a group means that individuals have to cooperate with each other to achieve a certain goal, despite the differences that may exist. In order to get a better understanding of the influence of diversity in the workplace, I interviewed Luis Overcast, the director of an English school in Mexico composed mainly by people from Mexico and the United States, including a couple of Chinese teachers. The positive outcome that the students get from learning about different cultures is remarkable, said Luis.…
