Diversity In The Workplace

Over the summer I started a lawn care business with the help of my friends so I could make a bit of cash. Before we knew it we had quite the big operation on our hands and people all over our town were depending on us to maintain their yards and keep them looking beautiful. All was smooth sailing until I came to the sudden realization that soon my buddies and I were going to have to be going back to school soon, and these people still needed somebody to depend on. With school, band, and other devotions soon to be taking up the majority of my time, I needed to find workers quick before the school year started. Still being a high school student, of course most of my connections were also in school with me, so I was going to have to look elsewhere for hard working individuals to help me keep the business running strong. Living in the south near the border, my town has a decent population of Hispanics that are looking for work. They group up in parking lots and whenever the people in my town need a bit of help they are willing to work for them. At first I was a bit hesitant in looking for them for help, mainly because they did not speak English too well and were quite a bit …show more content…
As we worked they began to relax a bit and we were able to joke and work together surprisingly well. They worked very hard all day long and didn’t complain about the heat or rough conditions a single bit. They paid fine attention to detail and provided top quality work, just as I had asked of them. I taught them things and they taught me things. I learned about how tough their lives were and I even caught on to a bit of the Spanish they were speaking to each other. At the end of the day I paid them and they shook my hand and thanked me. I was very impressed with what these hard working men had to offer me. In fact, I was so impressed that I asked for their contact information so I could have them working for me every

I worked well with everyone who helped me because I respected and trusted them. I put patience in everyone and made sure they had enough time to do what they needed to do. However, I’m not a very patient person, so being patient with everyone was difficult. I updated almost everyone regularly so they wouldn’t be out of the loop. Some did the same for me, others didn’t.…

My buddies weren’t as happy as I was, mumbling and cursing under there breath as they were ripping off siding on the house. I was just grateful that they were there with me. I ended up working that man willingly a couple more times throughout high-school.…

I think when people tell you thank you for your help, they were the most rewarding experience. For example, I had a woman who did not know how to claim for a work accident because her manager told her that because she was undocumented, she did not have right to claim for anything. I told her that her employer was wrong and she can claim for Workers Compensation that it is an insurance that companies has to pay for their employees even they are undocumented. I read a pamphlet that the Labor Commission left to my organization. She told me, thank you so much for your help.…

    Hiring For Diversity

Hiring for diversity is an important issue and sometimes it is necessary in public agencies, and also the fire service for many reasons. One reason would be that in these communities there are cultural barriers, which mean that potentially there also are language barriers. This can cause lack of communication between the ones that are providing the help and those that need it and can be extremely frustrating for the providers. Hiring people that are bi-lingual is a huge bonus for public agencies. In addition, having diversity can ensure that people in the communities feel that their race, religion, culture, gender etc. are being respected and that are also well represented.…

While some worked with compost, built food plots, or filled mulch barrels, I mulched rings around tree plants, pulled weeds and mulched along the property line, and pulled weeds between plant rows on the site. Strangely, I enjoyed this part of the day; being from the farm and country background that I am, it was refreshing to get outside and play in the dirt. Working with my friends in the same project was also nice, because it gave us a chance to talk, finding new things about each other while also being productive. The only part of the day I did not particularly enjoy was having to listen to some of the other student’s attitudes and complaints, hearing how some of them were very negative, close-minded, and ungrateful for the opportunity to help out their…

They understood what was expected of them and they understood where the work would be when they returned to school. As I was explaining the procedure to the class there was one boy who was not excited about this responsibility. He said he did not want to get the Absent Folder for an absent student or collect the student’s work. Listening to this student tell me his feelings, made me realize that while most students were excited to take on this new responsibility of taking care of their neighbor, there are students who do not feel this way and feel that this is just another job. The same student also said he didn't want to do the work that he missed if he was absent.…
