Diversity is defined as variety, especially the inclusion of people of different race or culture, which happens to be the focus of most diversity initiatives. Diversity in the workplace began in the United States after the passage of the 1964 Civil Rights Act when the US American industry began to see new categories of workers such as women and those with disabilities. In today’s world, the United States is considered a “melting pot” of ethnic cultures. Due to globalization, diversity has become a huge part of the workplace and therefore it is important for organizations to focus on trying to find ways to deal with having a diverse workforce. This is just one of the issues that arise when dealing with diversity. A few more issues will be discussed next and although they are not all necessarily issues, they still need to be looked at when trying to figure out how to manage diversity. Personality can have a role in diversity and may cause some issues. When dealing with introverted and extraverted personalities, research showed that extraverts became more excited and interested in the task than an introvert did in the same task. The research also showed that extraverts are at more risk of committing errors or omissions than introverts were when completing a tedious task. Loyalty and organizational commitment also has issues when dealing with the same personalities. Extraverts are likely to be committed to the goals of the organization, but may decide to change jobs if a good opportunity arises, whereas the introverts are more likely to be loyal to the organization. Generational diversity can bring about issues because of the differences between generations. Research from a healthcare organization showed the differences between generations and it should be noted that this might not apply to whole populations of a specific generation. The veteran generation (pre 1945) is diminishing as they are the oldest generation. The nurses from this generation are solid, reliable, value consistency, and expect to be rewarded for hard work. The baby boomer generation (1946- 1964) are loyal employees and have a strong work ethic. Generation x (1965-1976) are independent, self- directed, and tech savvy. Quality of life is important to this generation and they like to see action rather than talk and promises. Generation y (1977-1997) accepts multiculturalism as a way of life.
