The Importance Of Campus Security

Security is very important when it comes to college campuses. Keeping students safe should be at the top of the priority list for colleges. When parents choose a college for their child one of the biggest factors that influences their decision is how effective the security is on campus. Parents expect their child to be safe at college, but we sometimes have to question how effective is the security on campus? The University of South Alabama should provide more security because it would increase enrollment, lower the crime rates on campus, and give students a sense of security. With the access of lights throughout the campus, students would not have to be afraid of walking at night around campus. Students should be able to enjoy a late night stroll or jog, without fallen victim to a senseless crime. Usually when there are no lights, the chances of burglary will likely increase. To know that there are cameras and lights surrounding the parking lot, more people will feel safe when they have to walk to their car in the dark. The lack of cameras has shown to be a problem. This semester here at South, there has been two reported crime incidents. One incident was when a fellow student got robbed while walking to his room. Another incident was when a girl was also walking to her room when a male student came from behind, and pushed her to the ground and then fled. Furthermore, there are several night classes offered at South, and having more lights throughout campus will make it easier to see opposing threats. Also, having cameras throughout the campus reduces the number of robberies that involve vehicles. With more cameras, thieves are less likely to do the crime and risk the chance of getting caught. The University of Cincinnati did a study on campus security that involved increasing the number of cameras and lighting. Well, when you are trying to keep students safe on campus and trying to save lives daily, money should not matter. Studies from the Purdue crime stoppers have shown that increasing the numbers of lights and cameras throughout a campus has reduced the number of crimes related to robbery and assault. So instead of worrying about cost you should use these ideas to make this campus a better and safer place not just for us students but for yourselves as well. We as a campus should encourage more security so we can feel safe at night going to bed, walking around campus, or just going to our car at night. So to reduce college campus related crimes, you should have enclosed residence halls, lights and cameras throughout the parking lots and campus, and have police zones and emergency call towers. Reducing crimes on campus means reducing the negative attention related to campus and increasing the amount of students who apply each year to attend the college.
