Title IX Synthesis Essay

The article written by Peter Schmidt, draws attention to a very important question, is Title IX enforcement still serving its intended purpose? The shear complexity of Title IX is daunting and broad to say the least. Recently, Title IX has received a lot of attention and publicity with the release of the movie, The Hunting Ground (Dick & Ziering, 2015) which depicts the true story of several college students who were sexually assaulted while attending colleges and universities across the United States. There are two main points I believe to be true when discussing Title IX enforcement. One, it is human nature to prioritize items based on needs. Two, everyone has room for improvement. You may be wondering how these two statements relate to Title IX? I will explain in detail. First, Title IX encompasses so many components as it relates to equal opportunities in education. It is most well-known for the impact it has had on athletics, however this is just the tip of the iceberg. The statistics on what happens to those convicted of a sex based crime on a college campus is embarrassing to say the least. Until we do a better job of deterring and preventing those from committing sex based crimes and equally as important do a better job of protecting victims, then our attention, time, and commitment is still needed. This issue of campus safety may be eclipsing other issues, but my argument is it must be a priority until college campuses can be safe for all students, staff and faculty and visitors. Our attention cannot be diverted from safety until it is safe, and then and only then can we begin to meet the other very real needs of equal pay access and
