Sexual Assault On College Campuses Essay

Sexual assault on college campuses has always been a problem. Just recently it has become more publicized due to the growth of the internet and media. This problem is difficult for universities to solve due to the following challenges. The largest challenge that colleges cannot solve is the condensed living facilities. Thousands of students are confined to a small area and can run into each other at any time during the day. Another challenge is that if an assault does happen, there is no guarantee that anyone will know besides the victim and the attacker. The victim might be scared to say anything due to the how close she might live to the attacker. The last challenge colleges face is how to react to an assault when after it takes place. Before 2011, each college handled these incidents in different ways. They could be as lenient as handling internally or as harsh as turning the attacker over to the authorities. Now President Obama has implemented a Title IX law that makes all colleges react to sexual assaults the same way. This law made it so that any victim was completely separated from the attacker, but the attacker was still allowed to attend school. Universities are held accountable for these policies through a Facebook page called “The IX Network”. The way this would be carried out is by enforcing larger punishments on attackers. This would act as a deterrent to any would-be assaulters. Another potential de jure method would be to separate the residence halls by gender. This would not eliminate sexual assaults on campuses, but would reduce them.
