Importance Of School Safety Essay

School safety has become a main focus in the education system over the past several years. It seems that schools are becoming the target of violent crimes. Every year teachers sit through in services training them with new ideas that are being implemented to keep students safe. Schools in our area are very old and when they were built violence was not an issue. School administrators now have to take these old schools and make them safe and functional without making them feel like a prison. Majority of the schools are open to the community and not closed off as they should be. The windows also are an area of concern when it comes to safety. Most schools have multiple windows per classroom that exposes students and faculty to outside …show more content…
The schools that are exposed to the community need a plan which will keep unwanted intruders out. Most schools have surveillance cameras located in specific locations that can monitor the traffic of the entrances. I believe this is not enough to ensure safety. Once an intruder is in the camera does nothing for the safety of the students and faculty members. In order to eliminate and monitor unwanted quest, I believe a school should have only one entrance for ques and all other entrances should remained locked at all times. This would be monitored and watched closely. A desk should be right in the front of this entrance to make sure everyone signs in and is correctly identified. Safety is not only an issue when students are inside but also when students are outside at recess. The schools are open and often do not have a fence around them which causes a danger when you have 300 plus students outside. This is where you have to balance safety and avoiding the school feeling like a prison. The main goal is to protect the students but in reality there will be times that this cannot happen. We have to let the students feel safe and free. Once we start locking them in chain fences they will no longer feel like students. I believe as long as we have a plan implemented and practiced for different situations this will support the safety of everyone on the …show more content…
I believe a school resource officer should be located at every school. This officer should let the students know that they are there for the safety of the students. I do not believe the officer should be a disciplinarian unless it is a major crime. The SRO should be used to protect the students from outside intruders and of course any dangerous situation in the school itself. Besides an officer being located at each school some may say all teachers need to be armed. I do not believe a teacher should have access to a gun in the classroom. This gives me a little anxiety just thinking of this. I do not feel confident enough that I nor anyone else is fully trained to use that gun appropriately. I do believe a teacher does need some form of protection and an alternative to a gun could be a Taser. The Taser will not kill anyone but it would allow you to get the situation under control and buy some time until help

Another sense of security can be reached by having a gate where you must have a parking sticker to enter the campuses. By doing this students know that the only people allowed in the school are those that attend the class and the teachers and staff. Also another simple solution is having on campus security.…

Opponents of this view insist on investigating other ways of ensuring security in schools, considering its serious nature. According to them, these comprehensive approaches help to build a sustainable and caring environment which is safe for learning while eliminating the need to put forward dangerous ideas like giving firearms to educators. When considering strategies to enhance school safety without resorting to arming teachers, several potential alternatives are carefully considered. One approach involves boosting school security through measures such as the deployment of armed police or the installation of metal detectors at school entrances. After a study was done on parents' perceptions of armed teachers, the results state “Although perceptions of child safety and experience with guns varied by location, most parents agreed on potential solutions, that it should be the security officers, not teachers, who should be carrying firearms and that armed police should be present in schools to provide safety”…

Also if there are teachers armed or school security can be alerted to shut down the school. This can cause police to possibly capture the suspect without doing harm of hurting any students and staff because these schools have the power to electronically close hallway doors . Mo Canady said, “This summer, the organization trained more than 2000 law officers how to work with schools, more than three times the 600 who were trained last summer. The presence of police officers in elementary schools is going through a revival” (Marklein). The more police on station at schools have a better chance to help students because they may know the layout of doors and rooms already than a police officer who just arrived.…

Specialists have grasped the concept of becoming proactive instead of reactive to situations where lives are at stake. Professionals believe that arming teachers in school districts can help protect children from the up rise of violence in school. Although this idea may be a headed in the right direction, I feel as if there are more effective procedures. Hiring armed security guards removes the cost a school would have to pay to train teachers. This will also eliminate the risk of schools being dropped from their insurance policies or having to pay more as a result of having armed teachers.…

If a teacher snaps one day he or she could pull out their weapon and shoot a student. While the odds of this are incredibly small it is still an issue that must be taken into consideration. A more likely issue would be an accidental discharge which could happen for many different reasons: such as taking the weapon out of its concealed place and moving it and not being careful enough around the trigger, or if a teacher was being careless and just touching the gun they could cause an accidental discharge. If a student were to get their hands on a teacher 's weapon they could then use that to devastating effect, and quite possibly become a…

The concerns stem from schools not having enough money or the proper resources to provide a safe building for students, down to the smallest task of getting books or pencils for the classes. This chapter discussed how to prevent and respond to violence on school grounds to insure the safety of the students. Although this was a fairly short chapter, the content is important because of the high number of violence and shootings that occur at schools, it is good to be well educated on how to prevent, respond, and aware of violence. This chapter discusses about strategies to prevent and how to respond to different types of situations with facts, examples, and through dialogs. An “Aha” moment was the section of observing and identifying the signs and de-escalating potentially explosive situations. More specifically the fact that teachers need to be more attentive to the escalation of a students anger before adding to the possible…
