Officer Jim Corbin of the National Association of school Resource Officers, talked about pressures that kids deal with outside of school and how these problems manifests in their behavior. He believes that society and parenting plays a huge role in the actions of these youths. They will not be able to focus in class due to worrying about how they will walk home and reach safely. I attended Lauderhill Paul Turner Elementary school and wherever a crossing guard is, a police officer is parked in the car, ensuring that kids are being crossed safely and that things are in order as the youths are walking home. When the students are bring all this pressure with them to school, they tend to become very aggressive and violent. Which in fact, leads to a display of violent behavior and the simplest things can tick them off. He then stated that, it is no longer fighting on school grounds; they are now going home for guns and that is how the issues are now being solved. Corbin said, administrators are starting to think that law enforcement is trying to take away their powers, but in fact they are not. They just want to ensure that the children are being supervised properly and that gang related matters minimizes; so that the learning environment is safer. In that way, children are more relaxed and ready to learn. Also, teachers are in a safer environment and will be able to focus on educating the youths, other than looking out for violent disruptions.
