Technology has taken a huge part in the lives of the people of today. So much, that some cannot stay away from their phones for more than five minutes. Though technology improves and continues to serve the world population in many beneficial ways, it has created a distraction from what is going on around them. A major distraction that has harmed people for many years is texting and driving. Some may argue that it is a matter of freedom and that banning texting and driving is pointless. However, this harmful distraction puts the driver, passengers, and other people on the road at risk of being badly injured or even dead. Texting takes the attention away from the road by five seconds. A lot can happen during that time. This issue involves the three main types of distraction: visual, manual, and cognitive. The combination of all three makes texting the worst type of distraction while behind the steering wheel. As kids get into the teenage stage, they are most excited to begin driving. However, many take advantage and disregard the safety precautions needed to be measured while driving. Almost every day that I am behind the wheel or I am sitting in the passenger’s seat, I glance over to the driver passing by me and I see a phone in their hand. There have …show more content…
According to the National Highway and Transportation Safety Administration, texting and driving is the same as drinking four beers then getting behind the wheel right after (Masters). Both drinking and texting while driving are big issues that kill and injure people. However, a research from Cohen Children’s Medical Center showed that 3,000 teenagers die from texting and driving compared to those 2,800 who died due to intoxicated driving (Allen).
