For every car accident in the U.S, 1 out of 4 are caused by texting behind the wheel. In our modern era, teens are often texting while driving, 25% respond to a message once or even more as they drive. About 35% of teens know the dangers of texting and driving but admit to continuing to do so. Another 55% say that texting and driving is an easy task. Texting while driving is commonly seen in teens and young adults, however parents are also involved. About 15% of younger people have seen their parents drive and text.
Since there has been an increase in texting and driving, many states have passed laws to prevent drivers to use their cell phones while driving. Very few states hold harsh penalties such as Alaska, with a ten thousand dollar fine and a year in prison. However, there are also states where there is no penalty at all such as Arizona. As for other states, the penalty fee can range anywhere from twenty-five to five hundred dollars with or without prison time and/or license suspension.
