“According to the CDC, each day, nine people are killed and 1,060 more are injured in crashes that involve a distracted driver” (“Distracted Driving in the United States and Europe”). A text message can wait. So many studies have been and are being conducted on texting and driving and most of the outcomes are negative. After reading this maybe someone that picks up their phone while driving will think about the consequences. Texting while driving reduces the attention people pay to the road, is harmful in all cases, and teens are not the only ones who do it. The attention paid to the road while driving is very important. For example, if someone is driving through a neighborhood and their phone rings or buzzes, there may be children playing outside. One steps out and gets hit because the driver did not see the child chase his ball into the road. It would be hard to live with hitting a child or anyone because of a text message that could have waited. “49 percent of adults surveyed say they have texted while driving” (Copel), also “more than 4 in 10 teens have admitted to texting and driving” (“Study: Teens Who Text and Drive Take Even More Risks”). Hitting a mailbox or running a red light is dangerous but sometimes the damage is only to a vehicle or property. Text and driving more likely can result in far greater damage or death. People should think before driving somewhere and picking up the phone to text someone when behind the wheel. Texting while driving reduces the attention people pay to the road, is harmful in all cases and teens are not the only ones who do it. Knowing that “more than 4 in 10 teens say they have texted while driving” (“Study: Teens Who Text and Drive Take Even More Risks”) and that “49 percent of adults say they have done it also” (Copel).
