Distracted Driving Laws: The Dangers Of Texting And Driving

A police officer pulls into a family’s yard. The family already knows that it’s a bad sign, something happened to somebody they love. He walks up to the door and tells them that their son died in a car accident. A million questions run through their brain. The officer tells them that their son was killed because of a teenager texting on his phone while he was driving. When the officer had asked the teenager why he was texting and driving, he said that “he can multitask while he is driving” (“Just Drive”). The truth is that someone cannot multitask while operating a motor vehicle (“Just Drive”). In our world today a lot of teenagers and sometimes even adults think that texting and driving is okay. Nevertheless there are not that many laws and regulations out there for texting and driving. There are no laws in any states that state all cellphone use is banned (“Distracted Driving Laws”). In contrast to this there are 14 states that prohibit all drivers from using hand held cellphones while they are driving a vehicle (“Distracted Driving Laws”). Texting and driving is a big problem, but there isn’t much that is being done about it. When driving while intoxicated was a big problem they passed a law to help it. In fact, every state today has a laws for drinking and driving, but not all states have talking/texting and driving laws (“Distracted Driving Laws”). Washington was the first state out of all 50 states to finally pass a law of banning texting and driving in 2007 (“Distracted Driving Laws”). More states need to pass laws to make driving on the road a safer environment for everybody. Teenagers are adapting to texting and driving, if we start passing laws to stop it we will can cut down the amount of accidents caused by …show more content…
The risk of a teenager or an adult having a near crash or crash is 17% higher when there is cellphone interactions going on (“Eyes on the Road”). There are multiple studies being conducted today due to the rising cause of this problem. Many psychologists have fond that a ringing phone is extremely compelling, so it is hard for people to ignore it. This is because they feel the need to remain connected to their cellphones (“Just Drive”). One easy solution to texting while driving is to get an app. There are multiple apps out there that will shut down the cell phone from receiving messages and calls from other people. Teenagers and adults need to get in to their cars, stay off their phones, pay attention while they drive and arrive safely at their destination (“Just
