This method is one of the most popular approaches to assess team performance. Here, SMEs assess teamwork abilities. A checklist with a 5 or 7 point scale is employed and the following factors of team performance are assessed: team orientation, team leadership, communication, monitoring, feedback, backup behavior, and coordination (Dickinson and McIntyre 1997). Nonose, Kanno and Furuta (2009) mentioned both the pros and cons of this method. The advantage of this method is that the score represents the overall team performance. On the other hand, a drawback of this method mentioned by them is that, it measures performance and team coordination very superficially and cannot identify the processes supporting team performance (e.g. what makes a team do something cooperatively and what are the causes of failure in …show more content…
A very important component of TSA is the belief that team members have in other members. Thus, to capture the dynamics of the cognitive mechanism and evaluate the internal essence of TSA, “belief” was introduced into the definition of TSA (Shu and Furuta 2005; Shu et al. 2004).To understand the basis of cooperative activity in a given environment it is important to comprehend mutual awareness which in turn is reducible to mutual beliefs (MB) (Shu & Furuta, 2005). Kanno (2007) presented a team cognition model that was built on the basis of Endsley’s model of SA. Kanno’s (2007) MB model has three levels of mental components. The first level represents the level of cognition an individual possesses, the second level marks the degree of understanding in a partner’s cognition, and the last level is the degree of belief in a partner’s belief. The measurement of the components is described with an example below. The types of interaction seen between different levels of this TSA model is both inter- and intra-personal. An advantage of this model is that is makes it easier to theoretically differentiate between what is really shared and what is only believed to be shared. The authors (Shu & Furuta, 2005) developed a belief elicitation method and proposed SA evaluation indices in order to assess TSA based on MBs. An experiment of cooperation (on a team of two individuals) was conducted to test the validity of these indices. In this experiment, a
