My Reflection On How My Changes As A Writer

When signing up for classes at the end of my sophomore year, I was hesitant towards joining college prep writing. I did not think I needed to improve as a writer, I thought everything I wrote was great. As the semester went on and we learned the various parts of writing, I realized that there was a lot of room for improvement. This class has helped me improve my writing in more ways than I thought were possible. At the beginning of this school year, my approach to writing was, in a sense, incorrect, but I thought that the way I wrote my papers was completely fine. The approach I took on writing greatly changed as the semester went on, and I can see the improvement that simple change has done. Before I took this class, I always sat down and …show more content…
Some of the things I need to work on include expanding my vocabulary, creating stronger introductions and conclusions, and generating ideas. The outlines I make help me get a better idea of what to write, but I still have a hard time finding a topic to write about. Throughout my papers, I tend to lack good vocabulary, so in the future I plan to use different resources to get rid of the old, repetitive words. Lastly, to fix my introductions and conclusions, I will try to stay away from the basic side of things and make them more unique and …show more content…
I have learned that improving my writing in any way can actually help me tremendously. Something as simple as having good word choice or making your paper unique can be a huge difference in whether or not you get into your favorite college or receive a scholarship. I plan to use everything I have learned to help progress as my future continues. I started out this semester with procrastinating when it came to writing papers, but I soon found out that you have to put a great amount of effort into becoming a good writer. After the first couple of assignments, I figured out that I could not write a good quality paper in one night. I started to put more time and thought into my papers and I immediately saw improvement. The only change I would make about this class is being more serious about it from the start. What I found to work best for me throughout the class was all of the worksheets we received and no red ink. Even though they were super simple things, they helped me better understand each concept of writing. I think those assignments were what really helped me improve. I will admit, at the beginning of the year, I dreaded receiving these, but as time went on, I realized how much they actually helped

In general, I would say my writing process needs improvement. I struggled with many assignments for this class because of it. First of all, I did all of them at home in my room, and it was really hard for me to concentrate on the work. There were too many distractions, and I took too many breaks. As a result, it took me much longer to finish the assignments than it should have. I think I would benefit from writing at the library…

I started my journey through writing this year a bundle of nerves and a stomach full of coffee. This is my first year taking an advanced English course, but I was determined to do well. There has been no sleeping in class or slacking off this year, I’m lucky enough to take a college course a year early and at a better price, and I’m not going to waste it. I’ve learned a lot this semester, including but not limited to: identifying how exactly the author’s purpose and audience determines effective writing, developing pieces of writing though a process of planning, revising, and drafting, compose an organized essay with clear points and main ideas, used appropriate tone and formality, critiqued writing, and finally how to grasp the MLA format. College Prep Writing Advanced is the hardest class I have ever taken. I learned a lot over the course of this class, and I believe that my approach to writing has changed. I have learned that while writing it is easy to underthink, but it is easier to overthink. I also learned you cannot wait until the last minute to revise and edit essays. The first paper we wrote was the personal essay. I took not using linking verbs to heart, and took almost all of mine out. I learned the hard way that even though linking verbs should be in every sentence of an essay some sentences will not makes sense without them.…

I personally can say that I have seen an improvement in my writing since my initial evaluation in the middle of the semester. During my first evaluation I was very confused with many of the general concepts the class held and it reflected in my writing. Answering the questions presented in the midterm evaluation and reviewing my first writing assignment Meta commentary pushed me to try to grasp a better understanding of assignments and ask for more helpful feedback that would benefit me in developing writing especially in the concept of methods and organization. Slowly and surely as the rest of the semester progressed forward I saw an improvement in my writing style and content. Perhaps, the most valuable concept…
