English 1320 Course Reflection

Improved Essays
Over the course of this semester in my English 1320 class I have seen a drastic change throughout my writing style. Although I still have difficulties with a few writing tasks, I believe that I have improved significantly throughout this course. I have found that with my professor’s guidance along with my own personal editing that my grades have increased. Although it is difficult to not get caught up in simply striving for a letter grade or attaining a 4.0 grade point average, I would like to believe that my main goal was different. Of course I would love to achieve those goals as well, but overall my primary goal throughout this class was to become more relaxed and comfortable in my writings, to use new strategies and proper kinds of conventions, and to truly find a way to express my passion on these papers. These tasks are far from being completed but I can see improvement with every assignment and …show more content…
My conference paper is where I received the highest grade, while in my other essays I was always just a smidge shy of an A. personally I believe that the reason for this was because I lacked control, structure, and purpose in my papers. My professor would tell me that I was “missing something” which continued to aggravate me as well as motivate me to try harder. In the conference paper I attempted to push myself by using all of the techniques I had learned throughout the semester. The annotated bibliography taught me how to correctly summarize an excerpt with proper citations. The synthesis essay successfully enlightened me on the art of combination, which is also what the executive summary asks me to do. The genre essay allowed me to focus on a certain topic and expand on it with more detail. Which brings us back to the conference paper where I was able to tie all of it

My revision of “Face it, America!” that follows this cover letter reflects what I have learned in English 1021 so far. While revising this essay, I learned when to use present tense in my writing and past tense in my writing when appropriate. In this class, I have learned to use more transitions and appropriate transitions in my writing. During this semester of English W131, I have experienced both accomplishments and setbacks while learning how to improve my writing skills. Throughout the course, I have learned that writing is not only about how much information is in the paper, but also about how well the writer’s thoughts are expressed throughout the text. Practicing many different styles of writing as I did in the class has helped me tremendously with my delivery in my writing. I believe that this course was one to prepare us for future writing courses with professors we will encounter who will give us feedback that may puzzle us because it will require more work and more thinking. Although I have had difficulty in the class, I do believe that I have learned from my mistakes and that I am finishing the course with stronger writing skills that will help me though the rest of my college career and life.…

I've posted your earned mid-term grades in English 111 on Banner and will be glad to discuss your situation with you individually sometime next week, if you'd like. These are information grades. As usual, knowledge is power: What the grade tells you gives you a chance to be pro-active in ways that might ensure your success in the course. A proper response to a mid-term grade is neither resignation nor smugness. Without my forcing the issue, the overall average at mid-term in my two sections of English 111 happens to be exactly 2.0 or "C," a reasonable outcome for a first-semester college course, one that includes several failures by students who simply quit coming to class and submitting the assigned writing projects.…

I started my journey through writing this year a bundle of nerves and a stomach full of coffee. This is my first year taking an advanced English course, but I was determined to do well. There has been no sleeping in class or slacking off this year, I’m lucky enough to take a college course a year early and at a better price, and I’m not going to waste it. I’ve learned a lot this semester, including but not limited to: identifying how exactly the author’s purpose and audience determines effective writing, developing pieces of writing though a process of planning, revising, and drafting, compose an organized essay with clear points and main ideas, used appropriate tone and formality, critiqued writing, and finally how to grasp the MLA format. My writing has improved through the concepts I have learned this semester.…

The first couple of sessions were like the ground periods, I had to get familiar with Hidden Oaks Elementary School and their ESOL program as well as to meet the team of teachers and their students. I will hope to capture in this reflection the knowledge obtained, the positive aspects, and outcomes of this valuable practice. Over the course of English 102, I have developed a new set of skills and learned to become a better writer. When I first came into English 102 I struggled with many different concepts of writing. During the semester in English 102, my writing became stronger because I learned how to incorporate evidence into my argument, do more thorough research, have smoother transitions, and have more organization throughout my essay. I learned how to peer review better and to take what others say and incorporate it into my essay. In the beginning, before English 102, I struggled with good organization and flow to an essay, sandwich evidence into paragraphs, and having strong arguments in persuasive essays.…

Throughout the entirety of this English 101 course, I have seen my skills as a writer grow. In the beginning of the school year, my writing fell short of my expectations, but as I continued to work and learn the principles of writing, I have written papers that I am proud to say are mine. Among the aspects of my writing I have improved, the best strives are seen within my my counter arguments and overall strength and coherency of my papers. To begin, when looking at a paper I wrote in August on necessity of first drafts, there were large gaps in my elaboration, bringing concerns as to whether I was arguing and proving a point or merely summarizing what Lamott, the author of the article, originally said. When attempting to argue my evidence, I stated,…

I’ve chosen to focus on “Exploration and Argumentation” as the subject of this reflective introduction, specifically looking at my argument paper, “Abortion: Right or Wrong?” as a reference to the importance of this learning outcome. I chose to focus on this particular learning outcome because it was the most difficult essay for me to create. While writing this essay it was difficult for me to understand and reciprocate the opposing viewpoint. Understanding an unfamiliar idea and giving ideas for or against a topic is key to creating a fluent argumentative essay.…

This English class has been very helpful in my efforts to improve my writing abilities, but has also been very challenging due to there being a different median for every essay. It’s been a heavy work load especially this semester since I decided to enroll in five classes, but in the end it has been very beneficial indeed. I can’t say that writing essays has been one of my strong points but I believe that this course has helped me improve tremendously and it has also made me feel a lot more comfortable with my writing.
