Reflective Essay: It Won T Be Easy In College

Improved Essays
“It won’t be this easy in college.” I believe every high school teacher has said something around those lines at least once to their students. While the statement is somewhat true, the idea can easily be debunked with the statement “It is only as hard as you make it to be.” My experience with English 1010 was that it indeed was challenging, but not hard. I stayed on top of my assignments and did my best on them so I wouldn’t feel the assignment was completed half-heartedly. I have efficiently met the Essential Learning Outcomes by working through the whole writing process, reading then analyzing articles, and writing to convey an idea.
Reading and analyzing scholar articles helped with my overall thought process. Working through articles written

What I mean by skimming over is maybe coming up with a phrase that I would write down then under it, in colored pencils, I would write words that pertained to the main topic. This was a okay form of drafting/outlining a paper, not the best and most efficient way though. Strategizing with prewrite, outline, rough draft, revision, then final draft, has been such an incredibly beneficial process in my writing this semester. For example, I feel like the outlining process for my third essay was the most fluid and productive in the light of writing my rough …show more content…
I plan on taking all the above mentioned tools to help me in, not only my next English classes, but in my other courses I plan on taking as well. I will also use other information given in English 1010 to better myself in my future classes. Being mindful with writing my papers has attributed to my self-proclaimed success with the past semester. Looking back at my writing I see where improvement can be, I will defiantly be more aware of incorporating and trying to balance out ethos, pathos, and logos in my future papers to better convince an audience on why my paper is credible, relevant, and

On the first day of school, I remember walking into class and seeing all of the new people in my class. I also remember meeting all of my new teachers. I had no idea how much that I would learn, and I had no idea how much I would struggle to learn the new material. One particular class that I feel that I have learned a lot in is WHAP. WHAP stands for world history AP.…

There are several factors for me wanting to transfer to Simpson College. I went to high school in Indianola and I like the small town feel along with the big city competitiveness. Indianola is a place that I have had great leaders and experiences that my children, in the future, would be able to learn and experience life, like I did. In high school, I had the privilege to be taught and mentored by Kevin Barnes, who also went to Simpson College. He talked highly about Simpson College and everything he had accomplished there; so, I've always been intrigued by the idea of receiving an education and competing there as well.…

To me, writing is just ok, nothing special. It definitely isn’t something I get excited about. My first formal writing class was in 6th grade, where we followed The Institute for Excellence in Writing’s curriculum. My fellow classmates and I mainly wrote short, 1-3 paragraph reports on various historical topics. I did well in these classes, I just never really enjoyed the process of writing.…

Probably the two biggest things I’ve learned from taking English 1010 is summarization and citation. At the beginning of the class, I struggled with not trying to make my summaries sound like lists. As I kept practicing, I learned how to reflect my writing style and voice into my summaries, while still being able to effectively get the point of the original source across. I learned how to add citations to my writing when quoting or paraphrasing a source, something of which I did very little in my writing before I took the class. English 1010 is also the first class where I have written a full length literature review concerning a discussion around a certain topic.…

After graduating high school in 2008 my parents gave me two options, go to college or get a job. However, going to college also meant getting a job as well because I still needed some income. I decided that community college was a better fit for me because I didn 't exactly excel in high school. When I enrolled at SUNY Adirondack in the fall of 2008 I was a Liberal Arts major because I still wasn 't sure what I wanted to be when I grew up.…

One of the most important lessons was that I needed to stay on top of my work otherwise it would take a while to catch up. In college, classes and papers will fly by faster than in this class, so I feel lucky to have the opportunity to feel the college paper writing experience. I also this this class taught me to work hard and never give anything less than 100 percent. I feel this way because with every paper I had to prove my skills and writing techniques in order to get a good grade. Taking this class has helped me improve my skills and techniques as a writer, and I look forward to the challenges that lie ahead in Composition…

Dear First Year Writing Assessment Committee: In this letter, I will explain my learning outcomes and experiences with my essays for English 1010. English 1010, defined by academic standards, is to develop in first-year college writers a deeper understanding of the complexities of writing through instruction and guided practice in the skills, processes, and strategies necessary for effective, successful writing. In my past semester of English 1010, I was able to demonstrate my abilities to be an effective writer and enhance my writing skills through guiding essay projects. I do believe my abilities were improved in topics including: finding the author’s purpose, explaining ideas, revising, editing, proofreading, organizing the structure of my paper, and etc.…

The course have taught me about critical thinking, writing formats, organization, in text citation, and citation of sources. However, these were already taught in high school, but the teaching was more in depth and the power point on integrating sources was the best power point in helping with my research position paper. I definitely believe that I have grasped the knowledge of rhetoric writing, but also improved my organization and citing my sources because I didn’t know whenever citing sources it must be in alphabetical order. As for my grammar and English word choices will need improvement.…

Learning different modes of writing and putting them into practice will allow me to be able to approach different subjects with an appropriate style. Although I had learned to use only academically credible sources before, I had become too lax and this class put me back on the right track of being aware. I have only done papers in APA format for the past two years, so this class was a nice refresher on MLA format. I think it’s important to be fluent in both; while in college you never know if different teachers will require a different format than others. Beyond improving my writing ability, this class achieved its critical thinking development goal as well.…

Throughout this semester of English 101, writing has become more of a skill than a struggle. Writing was a challenge that I dreaded when I chose to be in the course, nonetheless with time, I learned from my mistakes and was able to improve. This course made me very doubtful on whether I could be capable of even writing a paper that would provide me with a decent grade, but at the same time made me push myself in my writing technique. In the end, I can reflect that I learned from my mistakes and wrote papers that took time and dedication to accomplish. I learned from this class to be confident in my writing and make all the mistakes to receive the grade I want in the end.…

Throughout life, we learn different lessons be it from a teacher such as your parents, guardians, spouse, etc. or just going out and living and collecting experiences. From these, we grow and become the person we are today. We learn to shape us into the person we are and motivate the things we do and believe. I believe heavily in three core things I’ve learned in my life through experience. These core principles are Trust is something earned, sometimes you must think outside the box, and don’t let the bad moments outshine the good.…
