Essay On My English 101 Experience

From the time I started English 101, I had no idea how a paper was really supposed to be written. I struggled in English 101 because going from high school to a college course was totally different. The teachers were stricter and the essays were to be graded in a more sophisticated manner. But since I was able to better myself as a writer in English 101., it helped improve my essays in English 102. I was be to give more details and more information than before I started my First year Writing Program. My perception of myself as a writer from the time I began in English 101 to English 102 changed. I used to believe that no matter how good my papers were, I would not get any higher than a C, but everything changed when I started English 102. …show more content…
For example, when writing my conclusion paragraph, I need to work on summarizing up my major points instead of just listing the thesis and then trying to explain that a little bit. I also need to work on my transitions from paragraph the paragraph because sometimes it does not always work. Instead of me giving a brief summary of what I wrote about, I give half of a sentence and the other half is something that will tie into the next paragraph. Even though I have grown as a writer, I still worry about my grammar and punctuation. Sometimes I feel the need to add a comma where it should not go because when reading it out loud, it sounds like it needs to b there. Other times, I do not add a comma where is needs to go. If I were told that we only get one chance to turn in a paper, that would worry me also because I am so used to turning in three drafts. Every time I turned in one draft I would get it back with comments on what I need to fix. If I were to only turn in one paper I would not get the chance to fix those mistakes. Being able to turn in three drafts hurts me in a way because it gives me several opportunities to fix the paper instead of tuning it in and telling me what I go wrong the first time I submit the

Throughout the course there were many different assignments that I found to be challenging in their own ways. The design of many projects was much different than anything I had previously encountered, causing much more effort, and thought. Specifically, the rhetorical analysis and the proposal were two projects that took me outside of my comfort zone. Each project encompassed its distinct difficulties that ended up evolving my knowledge about writing.…

Over the course of English 102, I have developed a new set of skills and learned to become a better writer. When I first came into English 102 I struggled with many different concepts of writing. During the semester in English 102, my writing became stronger because I learned how to incorporate evidence into my argument, do more thorough research, have smoother transitions, and have more organization throughout my essay. I learned how to peer review better and to take what others say and incorporate it into my essay. In the beginning, before English 102, I struggled with good organization and flow to an essay, sandwich evidence into paragraphs, and having strong arguments in persuasive essays.…

Upon my entry into English 1010-02, my first college writing class, I expected to breeze through the course with an easy-A and minimal effort after my successful completion of AP English 11 this past year. I began the year with the utmost confidence in my writing abilities, and believed that my skills were above par. It wasn’t until I received my score on the essay evaluation for my First-Week Essay- a measly five out of twenty- that I realized that this was not the case. At first, I was astonished that my seemingly exceptional writing skills had not earned me the A that I believed I deserved. However, as time went on I came to the realization that I had not put in nearly enough time or effort into the paper to receive more than a C at most.…

Over the course of this semester in my English 1320 class I have seen a drastic change throughout my writing style. Although I still have difficulties with a few writing tasks, I believe that I have improved significantly throughout this course. I have found that with my professor’s guidance along with my own personal editing that my grades have increased. Although it is difficult to not get caught up in simply striving for a letter grade or attaining a 4.0 grade point average, I would like to believe that my main goal was different. Of course I would love to achieve those goals as well, but overall my primary goal throughout this class was to become more relaxed and comfortable in my writings, to use new strategies and proper kinds of conventions, and to truly find a way to express my passion on these papers.…

Everyone hates English class is what I thought before taking English 102. However, that may have been the case before I entered Dr. Byrd’s domain, but after finishing the class I have come to the realization that English class can be greatly resourceful. English 102 this year has had its ups and downs, and I must admit the ups outweigh the downs. Meaning, this year, I have learned that I am not a student who wants to read or write, but through reading and writing my mind and skill sets concerning English have grown. During English 102 this year, reading and writing in class helped me expand my writing skills, improved my will to comprehend, and most importantly helped expand my knowledge.…

I believe that sometimes my mistakes in grammar stay on my papers because while I am revising and editing my paper I have trouble reading the actual words on the paper and instead read the things that my mind says it should read. For example, one of my greatest mistakes is forgetting to write some commas when the writing should have it. The problem is that in my mind I read it as if the comma is there while it is truly not, I believe that this problem extends in part out of the fact that I read a lot of books where the grammar is not the best and I always try to ignore it while I am reading. Additionally, I also need to work on eliminating my run on sentences from my writing.…

English 101 taught me how to be more creative and broad about writing. Example on Essay 1 I didn’t really mention anything about Sonia Sotomayor’s mother not wanting her to work, and behind that was facts and important information about he context that I missed. I also approach my assignments differently now; I make sure my paragraphs are structured in the write order for an easy read for the reader. I realized when I start off with a good approach on a topic I have to tools and skills learned in class to expand ideas and write a solid piece of writing to read. I did also realize that I am bad to start off with, I haven’t seemed to find that spark to start me off right, so I guess that’s why they call it a shitty first…

As I think about my experiences throughout the semester of English 101, I have realized that I have learned some very important requirements that are important to help improve my writing. “Progress is impossible without change, and those who cannot change their minds cannot change anything (George Bernard Shaw).” During this course, reading and comprehending the materials given was not only a tough task for me but it was also demanding. I was challenged to change my thought process on what it was to be a good writer.
