Mandatory volunteerism is a topic that has been appearing more and more in Congress. Mandatory volunteerism is the act of forcing young adults to give up years of their lives for government service. The act of the government forcing volunteering is unconstitutional. Mandatory Volunteerism is unconstitutional. Nowhere in the founding document of the United States can it be found stating the action of forcing government service as being constitutional. America’s founding documents do not give Congress the authority to require mandatory service from American citizens. Article 1, section 8 of the United States Constitution lays out the authorities Congress have (art. 1, sec. 8). The Congress has the power to borrow money on the credit of the United States, to regulate commerce with foreign nations, to regulate land and naval forces, etc. The important thing to know is that Congress does not have the power to enslave citizens of the United States for government non-military service (art. 1, sec. 8). The Declaration of Independence, the founding principle of the constitution, states, “that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their creator with certain unalienable rights, that among are Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness” (para 2). This statement points out that the people of the United States have the right to do with their lives what they wish to do with it.
