As recently as this past June, Senator Rand Paul introduced legislation that would effectively dismantle the selective service, and has named it the Muhammad Ali Bill. Citing the lack of necessity for it in present times do to the already massive outreach of the United States across the world and a focus on arming/training nations we are tasked to defend (as opposed to “boots-on-the-ground”) and the problems forced conscription can bring, it calls for an end to the entire branch, thus leaving the military on a permanent volunteer-force…

Some people feel that the draft is a necessity even during times of peace and want it to be reinstated. What those individuals really want is mandatory service requirements. The draft was used in the past because of a shortage of troops, however that’s not the case today. We should not reinstate the military draft because we currently do not need soldiers, it is unclear of who would serve and who would not and how they may perform, and the military would be demoralized due to lack of commitment and comradery from potential…

If a young man or woman wants to fight and die for our country on the front lines of war, that it should be their decision to make. Every now and then, Congress poses the question, “Should women be required to register for selective service?” Although I understand that they would want to make sure that the amount of soldiers available are endless, I strongly believe that women should not be forced to enlist. The main idea behind the principal of utility is to choose what will serve the greatest good for the greatest number; therefore, when trying to determine what will best serve the American people, it makes sense to raise an army with numbers that will adequately defend the Union. One might argue that conscription, or forced service, is a violation of the citizens’ rights; however, Article 1 section 8 of the United States Constitution grants congress the ability to “raise and support armies” and “call forth the Militia to… suppress insurrections”. The Article does not express the way the armies are to be raised so it is at congresses’ discretion as to how best address the situation. Congress passed the Militia Act of 1862 only after the number of volunteers began to dwindle and States quotas were not being met. However, the intent of the draft was not to force citizens to serve, but rather to stimulate volunteering.…

Most people have jobs that at last 8 or more hours a day, and are tired, that just want to go home and spend some time with their family. The draft is a very important part of previous world wars, but the world wars were the sole purpose of this governmental system. During this time, the United States is not completely at ease with all other nations, but is certainly not in any raging war. The only reason there would be a need for a military draft is if there were not enough Americans joining the army during a time of need. Luckily, the United States is in a rather peaceful state and there are many young American’s joining different military departments and branches every single day. Thus, it should be recognized that there is no need for more military members to be recruited, who would require new training and cost the government extra money.…

Voting: a Right or a Requirement? Although only 60% of eligible voters vote, voting should be an option rather than a mandatory task. People have their reasons for voting and not voting, and they should be the ones to decide whether they want to or not, rather than forcing someone who isn’t educated in politics to vote, which could completely change the outcome of an election. Compulsory voting would be a bad idea as it would alter the results negatively by causing people who don’t care about politics to just vote for someone randomly, the idea itself is unconstitutional and against everything the document says, and it would just ruin the point of voting as results could end up being inaccurate.…
