On December 6,1865,President Lincoln abated slavery stating that all slaves would be freed and no longer be forced to work for no reward. In our own country today, however, many students across the nation are being forced to do just that, work for no reward. That is because it is just work and they are not really volunteering. When you take away the freely, you have forced labor. If a student freely chooses to volunteer for extra credit, that’s okay. Volunteering is to go out of your way to help others, but this is just doing what’s required, and therefore, the practice of making kids volunteer for a grade should be stopped.Forced volunteering needs to change. , Ignacio Sanchez, a student at Glynn Academy do not agree with students to complete 100 hours of community service in order to Graduate high school. In the following paragraphs I will explain why I do not agree with policy. One and most critical is the amount of time that it consumes and takes up! Time is one thing that is very valuable no matter who you are. 100 hours is equivalent to almost 4 whole days it might not seem much but if you are a very busy person it will be extremely difficult to accomplish this task or even impossible depending on who you are.…

In the article “volunteering to graduate” by Miriam Dodge and Pro/Con: should students service learning hour be mandatory for high school graduation by Claire Koenig and Simrin Gupta it talks about if they should have mandatory service hours to graduate high school. No because if a student wants to learn more skills they should look for a place to volunteer and also some students have an obligation to help out their families for economic reasons. Students and children have limited first amendment rights which at times subjects them to unfair treatment . Students have also fought for their rights, and few have won, but the one that have succeeded have breathed new life into students rights. An example of this is in a fiction book called Nothing But the Truth. A boy named Philip Malloy found himself fighting for his rights after singing the national anthem in a disrespectful manner during his class, which caused a major disturbance. I don’t agree with Philip’s behavior, but his case is interesting because I doubt an adult would have similar consequences.…

Students should not be required to stand up and say the pledge of allegiance. It should not be a requirement because an individual has the freedom to do as they please. If a student doesn’t want to say it they shouldn’t be forced to. What the pledge of allegiance says is “with liberty, and justice for ALL”. I do not believe that everyone in this country gets treated equally, not everyone that lives in America gets the justice they deserve.…

The concept of “bad” volunteering is unfortunately a sad reality and the differences amongst volunteering and voluntourism is very clear. I believe that volunteering and voluntourism are so vastly different they shouldn’t be categorized as the same, shouldn’t be marketed as the same program, and should not be associated with the same “work”. A volunteer should not be associated with voluntourism as its connotation is that the “tourism” aspect has taken over the “volunteer”. Individuals whose focus is on self-fulfillment rather than a commitment to learning, and developing a relationship with the community they are visiting - has given “volunteers” a bad image. As a volunteer, you aren’t present to be the savior of an underprivileged community,…
