Imagine if, Burlington County College decided to enforce community service as a requirement for graduation, that would be wonderful. As a student of the college, I feel we should do this, because helping others is so important. One of the problems with society today, is that people do not know how to give to others. Whether it’s your time or your talents, we always have extra to give to others. Sometimes, in our lives, we, need to be pushed into something, to find out we like it. They could use volunteering as an opportunity to explore career options, and gain training and professional development. I completely disagree the statement that Governor Gray Davis said “ Forced philanthropy will be as much an oxymoron in actions as it is in terms. Who would want to receive community service from someone who is forced to serve? Is forced community service in California not generally reserved for the criminals and delinquents?”(Eggers) Volunteering, is a great way to experience first-hand what a potential position in a particular career field could be like. It is “time we make a contribution to this world.” (Eggers) Volunteering might be one of the best ways to gain hands on experience for a future career. Once they start volunteering, they will develop a sense of compassion that they will be able to use for the rest of their lives. Giving a helping hand to the community will not only result in networking, but can also be a great asset to their resume. Volunteering, is also a great way explore a new career path or new hobbies they may never thought of doing before. Another good thing that may come out of volunteering is friendship. Volunteering, brings all walks of life together, and hopefully they will make friendships that will last a lifetime. Also, sometimes we learn by doing, so maybe this would give them an education outside of the
