“Empathy is a concept central to psychiatry, psychotherapy and clinical psychology. The construct of empathy involves not only the affective of the other person’s actual or inferred emotional state but also some minimal recognition and understanding of another’s emotional state” ( Decety and Moriguchi, 2007). When developing a therapeutic relationship being empathic means taking on the role as an active listener, attentive partner and competent speaker and therefore acting in a manner that demonstrates a clear understanding from the individual of their own perspective thus resulting in the person being able to engage in an individualistic way (McKenna et al 2012).
