Working With Clients

Clients may notice I am a female in a professional role when first meeting me. Each client will bring their own personal views of women with them, which could positively or negatively impact our sessions together. A client may feel more comfortable speaking about their personal experiences with a female therapist. There may be other clients who view my sex as an uncomfortable presence. Keeping a professional attitude in the session and building trust with clients could help overcome negative connotations to my sex.
I will bring extensive experience in working with developmentally disabled individuals and their families into therapy sessions. Families that include an individual with developmental disabilities often have life altering changes to make ahead of them, or have in the past, in order to provide the best quality of life for the particular individual. My experience working with these families in the past could provide a level of support they may not experience with a therapist who does not have a similar background.

This means I often verbally or physically direct them through experiences. I will have to be aware of my tendency to directly assist a client in order to accomplish a task for an individual and instead guide them to accomplishing the tasks themselves. I predict this will be one of my biggest learning curves in my clinical therapy skills. I will have to actively identify moments where I will want to step in for a client and learn to guide them instead to self-discovery. Self-discovery for these clients will allow them to exercise skills in their own personal growth and will have a larger impact on their lives if they feel as if they have accomplished it

As a potential counselor, working with a family will be one of my biggest challenges in my premature career. Treating a family entails many factors such as learning their family system(s), culture/ethnic background, communication patterns and identifying any emotional themes among other important elements. Within this process, it is vital to hear all the voices of each family member to find out the concerns, issues or problems each one bring to the family dynamic. However, applying these elements in a family therapy session may look different for every family that seeks treatment. However, it is important to bear in mind that a family therapy session may be the only place, where each family member can have a voice and speak freely.…

The first step I would take as an educator to help support families of children with special needs in order to maximize their success in my classroom would be to make sure that the child’s disability has been addressed or has been identified. I would make sure that the parents of the child have the necessary information in order to continue forward. I remember in a parent interview I did for Diverse and Exceptional Learner, that the parent got frustrated because the teacher was not direct with them and kept beating around the bush when the teacher was trying to tell the parent that they think their child has Asperger’s. Parents aren’t going to know what to do when their child is identified having special needs. Therefore, the first step a teacher should take when trying to support a parent with a child with special needs is to point them in the…

The beginning of Chapter 3 lays out the three main factors that are associated with the relationship between exceptional parents and the classroom. These parents over the years have provided many beneficial changes because they would advocate for their children 's’ disabilities. Educators also seek parental involvement because studies show that a student’s grades tend to improve when the parents are actively involved with helping their student academically at home. The positive results that come from both statements above links to the judicial mandates that require parents to be informed and involved with their student’s education. The goal once again is to make sure these students have as much resources as possible to help them learn the curriculum.…

"Describe a current event or societal issue and how you feel OT could impact the situation." While analyzing the required text for this week there were five ethical categories that reoccurred through each document: responsibilities to parents, collaboration, community, personal development, and students. In addition, there are other categories, but these are the most significant to me. Special education teachers have a responsibility to parents: • Use culturally appropriate communication with parents and families that is respectful and accurately understood (CEC, 2010). • Actively seek and use the knowledge of parents and individuals with exceptionalities when planning, conduction, and evaluating special education services and empower them as partners in the education process (CEC, 2010). • Respect the private nature of the special…

Challenges for families who have children are essentially inevitable whether it be because of busy scheduling, trouble in school, trouble with behavior, or anything else of that nature. These challenges don 't include having to change most of your normal daily routines to fit a family member 's disability needs. These needs can sometimes be physical things like needing help to go to the bathroom as you continue to get older, to get out of bed, to brush your teeth, to change your clothes, to shower. Sometimes these needs also include emotion things such as families having to adapt to the way a child may take certain jokes or actions made toward them, or not understanding why certain things may have to be done at certain times which most…

Introduction Special education has made significant changes over the past years, partly due to the fact that people have stood up and made a change for the better toward children with disabilities. Children are no longer put into segregated hospitals and left to die and forgotten about. Children for many years were labeled as unlovable and a disgrace and hid away from society. Parents were faced with humiliation and public scorning for having a child with a disability and lived in fear. People are now more widely educated and have advanced over the past century to include children with disabilities as part of society and not simply a disgrace to be swept under the rug.…
