I had the privilege to observe in a Capital Area Head Start program pre-kindergarten classroom. This was quite an eye-opening, and valuable learning experience because of the level of diversity that goes on in one of these classrooms. Head Start is a federally funded program that aids low socioeconomic status families in giving their children a safe, learning environment up to two years before they go into the public school setting. My field work experience had started in the preschool and where I have done the majority of my observations thus far. In the preschool I was beginning to understand how the different of components of the preschool all had concepts of phycology through all aspects of the classroom. During my time I saw how Piaget’s stages of cognitive development, how students handled new information through various methods, and Vygotsky’s sociocultural perspective are incorporated through different sections of the classroom. Some students were building a tower with blocks and after the teacher called him over to bring a toy, he used his hand to knock down all the foam blocks, the teacher reprimanded him, then he came back and started to used both of his hands to pick up large blocks in order to rebuild using the large foam blocks. He started playing with this ring toy where he stabilized the base and used the fingers of his other hands (finger and thumb) to remove the rings, which could be seen as building early. (Building middle at times as he was eating a cookie during snack time and was holding the cookie with his right hand while banging the table with his left hand.) I noticed the child using one hand to hold on the paper he was coloring, and then using the color with the other hand to make scribbles. Based on my observation, I believe Mrs. Laura was the expertise and Mrs. Jan was the novice. Mrs. Laura was able to think in a larger, more meaningful pattern. When it came to teaching reading, Mrs. Laura was able to take the book and create different activities for the children to learn. She made it fun for the children to learn. As a project for my Child Development class, I completed an observational child study. I chose a four year old male child of one of my co-workers, whom I had met several months prior to the study. Paxton was born on June 15, 2012 and was six weeks premature. Aside from the requirement of a feeding tube at birth, Paxton suffered no complications. Assessment Summary #2 – T.J. T.J. is a very interesting four year old, that I have had the privilege of being able to continue to observe him. He likes to play cars and rough house with his buddies especially on the playground. T.J. has had ups and down throughout my observation period at the child development center.
