I saw more of this type of playing with the 2-3 year old age group. Preschoolers only tend to do this type of playing when they are shy, but also like to be around others. I saw a few examples of this at the child developmental center. One example would be, a few kids weren’t talking as they would play with blocks just sitting next to each other. Another example is, they would play in the sandbox building stuff with sand as they sat next to each other. There were other kids just sitting at the table, drawing or coloring sitting next to each other as well. Children will develop some cognitive abilities as they play near each other even when they aren’t exactly playing together.
Associative playstyle is almost just like parallel play except the children will share certain toys as they sit next to each other. There really isn’t much difference as the children play associatively. I saw the children sitting around with the blocks and a child wanted one of the blocks the other kid had and they exchanged for each block the other one wanted. Another group of kids would be doing arts and crafts, they would sit at the table using each other’s brushes and paints but still not really interacting with one
