Gun Control: Would It Really Benefit America? Guns are a big issue in today’s world especially in the United States. The fact that people blame them for killing innocent children makes it even worse. An action that a person in their right mind would never think of doing, but not everybody is the same. Guns control is not is recent problem that has just started it goes all the way back to the first American Colonies. The people of the colony had the right to have guns for hunting and self-defense they were also required to use them in service of the local militia, but even then they had restrictions on gun rights (Mantel). For example, in 1637 around 100 Massachusetts Bay colonist had to give up their guns in belief that they were heretics. Also, slaves and other free blacks did not have the right to own guns in fear that they might revolt against the whites. Colonists did not have a problem with confiscating guns from the Loyalists and other mixed races that were deemed to be untrustworthy of having a gun in their possession. It was until after the Revolution that the Founding Fathers addressed gun rights in the Second Amendment in 1791. The amendment read as followed: “A well regulated Militia being necessary to the security of a free state, the right of the people to keep and bear arms shall not be infringed”.
