In October of 2010, the institute of medicine (IOM) published a report making recommendations for the future of nursing. The recommendations by the IOM suggest changes that are necessary for nurses and advanced practice nurses (APNS) to adapt to the changes being made in healthcare. The recommendation aims toward removing barrier that prevent nurses from taking on a roles that require them to fully utilize their skills. The first recommendation is that nurses be allowed to practice to the full extent of their education. The campaign states that nurses are an essential part of health care and has an overall goal of ensuring that all Americans are offered high quality and patient-centered care (Robert Wood Johnson Foundation, 2015). To put things in motion the RWJF dedicated a significant amount of money to programs that focus the chosen areas of focus such as education, research, training programs, and policy analysis (Robert Wood Johnson Foundation, 2015). So far, in 2015 the RWJF has awarded over 10 million dollars to organizations all over the country. Also, listed on the RWJF website are applications for grants. These application give organizations specific programs they can focus on and list qualifications that would make them eligible to receive a grant. The RWJF offers great opportunities for organizations with the intent to improve healthcare.
