1. How will you contribute to the mission of the NURSE Corps Scholarship Program in providing care to underserved communities?
Health illiteracy and lack of healthcare access in low income areas are well documented by my studies. This population is also known to have many comorbidities and a shortage of primary care providers. I want to make a difference in low income communities because they are underserved and improvised. Therefore, my contribution begins with furthering my education at Emory University. At Emory, their Family Nurse Practitioner program focuses primarily on community health, which will better prepare me to work in an underserved communities. I will be the type of provider that takes care of my patient’s physical and social needs by recognizing their social and psychology needs and make the appropriate referrals. Additionally, in order to further contribute to the mission of the program I want to advocate for future healthcare providers to practice in impoverished communities. Studies have shown that a majority of health care professionals currently in school may not have been exposed to community health or have had negative experiences. Through volunteer programs I want to educate future health providers about underserved populations that will hopefully result in future providers choosing to work in an underserved area during their career. The purpose of this program to support the mission to improve health and achieve health equity through access to quality services, a skilled health workforce, and innovative programs. I plan to carry out this mission by practicing and providing holistic care not only focusing on my patient’s physical needs, but social needs as well to improve overall health. However, too many Americans are not afforded this luxury. Some Americans live in rural areas, like our nation’s Indians, and have to travel great distances to access a healthcare delivery system. Even though, some may have accessed to some kind of healthcare facilities they are often limited by a number of services and lack of resources that they have to properly care for these patients because of their lack of resources. Also, there are some Americans who are living below the poverty line in “rough” area, often deterring some providers practicing in those areas. Or those same American’s living in poverty may have access to healthcare; however, they cannot afford insurance or pay out of pocket costs at the doctor’s office. What defines an underserved community? An underserved community is any community in which its members have a lack of access to care and other resources. The lack of access to care can be based on many factors such as income, race, insurance coverage, language or geographic location. An underserved community is a community where its members can’t have their basic right to health care fulfilled. As result, those community members suffer from lack of timely treatment, suffer from chronic diseases, and are not equipped to manage their diseases
