Kaiser Family Foundation Case Study

The Kaiser Family Foundation also referred to as Kaiser, is often cited in news stories and journal articles. In my experience, rarely, if ever, does its mention include an explanation of what Kaiser is or what this organization does. I have found it to be very prevalent in its mention during the current political election events and more so in the information that I have been researching for this class. Thus, my interest was sparked. The Kaiser Family Foundation (KFF) is a private foundation that is non-profit (Porche, 2012, p. 239). They provide facts, information, analysis, polling, and journalism to policymakers, the media, health care providers, and the public (KFF, 2016). Their largest campaign is the “Greater Than AIDS” campaign to educate and de-stigmatize HIV and AIDS (KFF, 2016). This organization’s non-partisan information can be a valuable tool to nurse leaders. This foundation serves to give “information young people can use to improve their health or the general public can use to understand the health reform law” (KFF, 2016). They strive to cover current events in health care thoroughly and provide all prevalent information. Nurse leaders should use this information to stay up-to-date on current medical issues and can locate educational information on health-related topics that would apply to all areas of practice. The KFF plays a role in policy making by being a non-partisan, accurate, and thorough source of information for policymakers as well as the general public. The KFF does not employ lobbyists but has contributed to individuals involved in politics within the last year (OpenSecrets.org, 2016).
