Praise the Football Gods Whether you hate it or love it, how often do find that your Sunday involves the NFL. You see it on social media, you hear people talk about it or an NFL game may be on your television. Or do you find yourself celebrating the newfound American holiday also known as the super bowl. Since its humble beginnings in 1920 the NFL has expanded at exponential rate while at the same time encompassing American culture. The NFL has a predominant affect on our lives, from a decline in social skills, to gambling, and to its immense popularity. I am of the conviction that the NFL is responsible for the decline in social skills today. I imagine the guy who works a 9 to 5 job and gets together with his boys every Sunday, as his social gathering for the week. They will most likely sit there mindlessly with the occasional comment on the game, because they are all experts. I also picture them as they eat chips and drink Budweiser, because it is the official beer of the NFL, all in an attempt to numb the pain of their lackluster lives. The NFL Players Inc. connects fans with their favorite players through apparel, toys, video games, and collectables to name a few. It is a highly lucrative business to say the least, Chris Petersen comments “Although NFL Players Inc. already has an impressive portfolio of licensees and partnerships that generate more than $1 billion in retail sales every year” (Petersen).
