A career is an occupation that takes up a significant part of a person's life. A significant part could be up to 70 or 80 years of someone's life or as little as ten years. Either way it is very important to pick a career right for you. If you don't pick a career that best suits you, you may be spending half your life and half your energy stuck in the wrong place, doing something boring. This could affect both your professional and personal life. One of the most important aspects of picking a career is wondering if it will make you happy, because your are likely going to have to do it for a long time. It is one of the most prestige PA programs in the country and the only Emergency Medicine PA Residency Program in the state of Iowa. The are currently five residents in the program, and the program takes 18 months to complete. “As an Emergency Medicine Physician Assistant (EM-PA) resident you will have the opportunity to specialize in the field of Emergency Medicine while working alongside physician residents and seasoned clinicals at one of the top medical centers in the country,” (University of Iowa Health Care). There are many opportunities this program gives to prepare someone to become a PA. The residency has four to five hours of weekly educational conference. Conference time includes lectures given by EM faculty, faculty from other areas of medicine, guest speakers and residents. Another thing the residency entails is Simulation and Procedure Labs. Simulations teach residents management of critically ill patients, treatment algorithms, and team leadership skills. Procedure labs are given throughout the residency to teach he procedural skills that residents get during clinical practice. Clinical practice gives a variety of services that teach skills essential to the practice of Emergency Medicine. These services include Advanced Life Saving, Emergency Medicine, Pediatric Emergency Medicine, Burn Surgery, Orthopedic Surgery, Trauma Surgery, Radiology and Ultrasound, and Surgical Intensive Care Unit. To apply for this program one must have a degree from an accredited PA program, a current NCCPA certification, Iowa state licensure, official PA School Transcripts, and three letters of recommendation (University of Iowa Health Care).
