Public workforce hiring through the practice of diversity may have satisfied the local, state and even national government in times past, but it has outlived its sole usefulness in this day of prodigious professionalism. The majority of the public scowls at “inside deals” and the “good ole’ boy network,” nonetheless it is still seen in its entirety in some forums. Politically neutral competence has grown in popularity by necessity; professionalism is fundamental, relying on knowledge, education and experience. Although hiring based on politically neutral competence seems to be the soundest practice, it seems that some diversity does make sense, and has its place in the public workforce right alongside politically neutral competence based hiring. The public workforce has a duty to provide services to the public with no consideration of the publics’ demographic. However, it does make sense to ensure that all members of the jurisdiction are aware of public workforce positions, in order to apply for them. At this point, the workforce is in the hands of the public. A diverse workforce may not be expected to meet job standards, missing skill sets or education standards, which in the long term could cause the agency to suffer by not reaching its goals. One exception to this type of hiring practice should be veteran preference. These members of society have already had public service experience, which should be considered. On the other hand, managers utilizing politically neutral competence systems expect job applicants to be educated, possess certain job related skills and demonstrate professionalism.
