As organisations go global in their nature of work and their human resource portfolio, diversity is the key thing they are looking for. Diversity in an organisation, though with excellent benefits, can pose some serious challenges. Hence Diversity Management is one of the hottest topics of modern organisational behaviour studies. Diversity Management is a process through which we create a positive work environment by understanding and valuing each other’s differences and beliefs.
Disney’s “Remember the Titans” takes oneto the chaotic period in American history and it is based on the true story of Herman Boone and his team.
The four key characters of the story are:
1) Herman Boone: new black American coach of the team
2) Bill Yoast: white ex-coach

The above line very aptly captures the motive behind our study of cultural diversity in organizations. Diversity in a broad sense refers to a range of demographic variables, including, but not limited to age, gender, colour, race, nationality, background, language and disability. It means understanding that each person is distinct and moving ahead to collectively understanding those differences. Diversity also encompasses tolerance and respect for each of the distinct qualities contained in an individual.
With the advent of globalization and internationalism, most organizations have increasingly started adopting diversity in an effort to become more open and creative. As they are setting up businesses in foreign lands, it is very important for them to understand the culture and work habits of people in those countries, so that they can effectively leverage their skills for better

Diversity management is becoming a buzz word in corporations. Leadership in top organizations are investing hugely in a diverse workforce, and then in making sure that they work together to produce productive synergies. This calls for an in-depth study into the different techniques that these organizations can use to become a globally multicultural firm.
We have referred to the work of Nancy J. Adler, who is the professor of international management at McGill University of Montreal. Her book titled ‘International Dimensions of Organizational Behaviour’ has helped us with providing us with six important aspects of handling diversity. We have also referred to the work of Subhash C. Kundu, who has a paper published on ‘Managing cross-cultural diversity’ in the Delhi Business Review.
Moreover, even through our personal experiences during our work tenure, we have witnessed some challenges with implementing diversity in our organizations. As students of IMT Ghaziabad too, our interaction with people from different locations, backgrounds and states, has made us sensitive to the aspect of stereotyping and bias.
