Additionally, in regard to the budget, a balanced budget should be implemented or at the very least a timeline proposed for a balanced budget which can occur through cutting corporate welfare, taking a look at public sector pay and improving tax compliance.
The federal government is the single largest employer in Canada compromising of two components. The government component consists of the federal, provincial and municipal governments and all of their departments. The other component, the government business component, compromises of public enterprises such as CBC. All together as of 2015 public sector employment accounted for 3.5 million people. (Johnson 2016, p.326) This reveals how essential the government is to providing public services for Canadians and as well how important the government is when it comes to supplying the job market with opportunities. This is important as the more inclusive the workplace is the happier citizens are, citizens also feel better represented by their government and as well increasing diversity creates a more productive workplace. There has been significant work to improve diversity but women, Indigenous peoples and other designated groups are still underrepresented in higher skilled jobs reflecting that occupational segregation is still a very current issue that is impeding the workforce. (Johnson 2016, p.357-358) A fundamental commitment by the government is needed to improve the situation. This can be achieved through having recruitment programs that target designated groups, such as the Canadian Space Agency has successfully done, as women represented thirty-two percent of the finalists for new astronauts in comparison to nine percent in the last recruitment campaign. (Wernick 2018, p.29) Furthermore, there needs to be better education programs put in place for employers to help overcome biases and discriminatory practices in the hiring process but as well the advancement process for moving up in positions.
