College Is Not a Waste of Money
In the essay “College is a Waste of Time and Money,” by Caroline Bird, Ms. Bird explains her beliefs that college is a waste of time and money and how people only go either because they are told to, or because they are not ready for life. She believes college students are all living in sadness and if they would invest money for years, instead of getting an education, they would get more money than if they were to build a career and work until the retirement age. Ms. Bird also explained the shrinking job market and how people waste their time on unnecessary classes, earning a degree in which they will not be able to find a job. Those who do not want to go to school, do not have to continue to go to school, I believe it is called free will. People who are not for school, are simply not for it, and no one is going to hold a gun to their head and force them to learn. It is all the choice of the person what they want to do with their life and if they believe school is not a solution then that is up to them, and not their mother. “I have been overwhelmed by the prevailing sadness on American campuses,” wrote Ms. Bird. Yet, it sounds more like a sob story to get people to feel sorry for those who are in college. She later wrote a false analogy saying, “This is the way it used to be with women, and just as society had systematically damaged women by insisting that their proper place was in the home, so we may be systematically damaging 18-year-olds by insisting that their proper place is in college,” but this is completely unacceptable. In modern days, every woman does not stay in their home to cook and clean for their husband and children, only the ones who choose to do so. Applying this to college students, only those who choose to do so, those who do not want to get to work their “nine-to-five jobs” as Ms. Bird wrote. Many of her claims are surrounded by logical fallacies. “The big advantage of getting your college money in cash now is that you can invest it in something that has a higher return than a diploma.” Ms. Bird believed investing money instead of
