Harbowski says, “Yes, colleges prepare people for jobs, but more critically, they prepare people for life” (Pg.260). Yes college does qualify you more for a job then the person without a degree but it does not prepare you. College will give you education you need for that job but not the experience. It will tell you what you need to know verse what they require. Our society is so focused on the degree that we forget to learn what to do when we finally receive that degree. So ask yourself, what do you do after you graduate? Most people would say apply for a job. But I ask the question, how? Ok after you figure that out, what do you do with your first pay check? How do you open a bank account to cash it in? All these things and many more are major parts of life outside of the academy. Things that no one payed attention to for the longest time and now all of sudden is a critical part of becoming an adult. Harbowski is assuming that 100% of students that go to college are going to be educated on the all of these things and much more. From experience I can sit down with any adult and have a mature conversion about the weather, sports, and even politics. But the moment the numbers 401k come up my face goes blank. I sit there listening to them talk about their 401k and how important it is without knowing a thing about it. If the school/college had taken the liberty to teach me these necessary things, life would be a lot
