Bad News Bear Recruitment

I appreciated Bock's insights on recruiting because he did not take a black and white approach. Rather he describes a mixed approach of selecting the best and looking for potential to train. While I will not be entering the job market anytime soon I find this approach to be the fairest for the new hire compared to the others he described. If you only hire the best in a single concentrated area, you risk having an imbalanced company in regards to talent. The "Bad News Bears" approach almost feels like companies are treating potential employees like charity cases in that they see potential but have a ton of doubt for their success. Combining the strengths of these two approaches ensures that your new hires will be able to be successful but can also grow with the company. This mixed approach to identifying potential new-hires is something all companies should be aiming for because while changing a recruiting mindset is difficult, it is also cheaper than investing tons of resources into selection and recruitment to only get a sub-par new hire. …show more content…
They go above and beyond the basic structure of recruitment to the point that even the CEO gets involved. This says a lot about how valuable Google believes their human capital is. Even though Google has been able to establish an effective hiring machine because of how intense the process is, I do not think this is the best way to choose new-hires. There are other companies consistently ranked alongside Google as the best corporations to work for and they do not feature a hiring structure as resource intensive as Google's, mainly because they cannot afford to. The best recruiting structure would need to be both efficient and effective. However, Google's goal is not to have the best recruitment system and since they have the capital necessary for such a system they shouldn't change
