Assignment Of College Writing Assignment

For this assignment, I chose to construct a writing assignment for high school juniors and seniors. The assignment’s structure is meant to help bridge the gap between high school and college writing by introducing high school students to college writing by having them work on and develop skills mentioned in the “WPA Outcomes Statement for First-Year Composition” which students should be expected to have by the end of their first year of college. The reason I wanted to construct an assignment that helped prepare high school students for college writing is because of the discussion in class in which we agreed that there was a wide gap between high school and college writing and how to close the space between the two. Williams, “A common complaint among college and university faculty is that entering freshmen generally are poorly prepared for the standards and expectations of undergraduate writing, and with good reason. I even make pre-writing necessary by assigning one pre-writing method to be turned in along with the final draft of the assignment. I did this because in my personal experience, I never did pre-writing for essays I did in high school. My English teachers would give us a writing prompt for an essay, and we were expected to start writing. Once I took college classes on writing, I found pre-writing methods useful and essential to my writing. I currently use at least one prewriting method, if not two, before writing papers for class.
